I’ve just read today’s article from the New York Times on Gilad Sharon’s dream on Ariel Sharon, Israel‘s former Prime Minister who had a ‘debilitating stroke’ while in power in early 2006. The article writer wrote that Mr Sharon’s family was urged to let the former Primer Minister die after the stroke, but his family didn’t agree to the idea. Gilad, one of the two sons of Mr Sharon from his second marriage, had a dream, which was described in the book he wrote about his father.

“I told them about a dream I had had many years ago,” he (Gilad) recounts in the book “Sharon: The Life of a Leader,” speaking of his discussions with the medical staff of Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem. “In that dream I was with my father in the hospital. He was lying in bed, surrounded by medical staff, and they had all either given up or lost hope and were about to leave, and my father didn’t say a thing, but he stared at me with this look, with those green-gray eyes of his, and I knew I would never give up, and that I simply would not leave him. This was a dream I had when my father was healthy and strong and the scenario was completely divorced from reality. I did not tell a soul about the dream at the time, but now I shared it with them and my fear that it was happening now and that I would never be able to forgive myself if we did not fight to the end. “

Based on this anecdote, would you have taken the same stance if you find yourself in a similar situation? It’s fairly easy to ignore dreams that you would rather forget especially if it involves someone you know or someone close to you. Would you have considered a similar dream as a sign of something untoward that may happen to someone you know and love? We will never really know. But we’re certain that dreams have critical function in our daily lives, hence we can’t help but to pay close attention to the details of our dreams…

Dreams, certainly, have specific but generally unclear purposes in our lives; we experience them for certain reasons. I studied in one of my undergraduate Psychology subjects that it is during this so-called rapid eye movement (REM) that we are engaged in dreaming. REM is also a sign that we’re in deep slumber. But when we wake up, we forget most of our dreams. I have dreams every time I sleep most nights (I seldom sleep in the afternoon nor take naps); I tend to remember some details but most often I fail to even recall the most critical details to make sense out of the dream (or even to share stories in this blog). But I remember that particular feeling that I had a dream last night, and I’m not even delusional about it. And writers continue to provide answers to this common human experience of dreaming. We continue to read about dreams being used as effective tools in stories. I keep reading dream sequences in fiction books, e.g., Jonathan Franzen‘s ‘The Corrections‘ and Susan Rebecca White‘s ‘A Soft Place to Land,’ to name at least 2 for now. And I see awesome depictions of dreams in certain artworks that I’ve seen from important art galleries like the MOMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (I particularly remember this painting that depicts St. Joan of Arc having a dream-like session with an angel that has been paying her a visit).

I came into scene in my sleep last night where there were others just standing by and watching the proceedings on the killing of 2 huge, hairy but sickly looking dogs. I don’t remember what happened prior to this scene.  One of the dogs was just in its dying few moments before it would be dead – I didn’t hear barking nor violent reaction from the other dog. And then the killing continued with the other dog that went on its knees as if pleading for its life. I remember seeing something similar in real life where I saw a young goat kneeling and behaving as if it’s pleading for mercy but then it still got slaughtered and later on cooked for a grand meal – this is traditional among people who live together for some time up there. This experience happened once when my late Father and myself visited our relatives somewhere in San Emilio, Ilocos Sur in the Philippines. It seemed so savage but we proceeded to actually eat and have the meal among ourselves and others in our clan who showed up for the occasion that was all unannounced because my Father and I just thought of visiting our relatives up north from Metro Manila one New Year’s Day many years ago. And I remember tasting the freshly stewed meat from the very young goat.

And back to my dream, the dog’s head was shattered in an instant by the weapon that was used to exterminate its life. I remember seeing something like a long shotgun but I’m sure it’s not something I’ve seen somewhere else. I’m not sure if I was shocked at seeing these proceedings but I was shocked at remembering the dreams after I woke up for the day.

Other people in the dream were not behaving as usual; it’s as if their emotions are being withheld. I felt like being in a European country that I think I’ve seen in one of those pre-World War I black-and-white movies. And it’s somewhere in the snow-capped mountains but it’s summer! Well…thankfully, I woke up soon.

There were other dreams the past months when my late Father appeared and played roles. In a dream I had last night, I saw him again with us and my brothers including Jonathan, Angelito Jr, Joseph, and Jason. I didn’t remember seeing Jeffrey nor our sister Lea. It was like a scene when we were still growing up. It could have  been in our house somewhere in Sibuyan Street in Sta. Mesa Heights in Quezon City, Philippines.  We had grown up faces but our bodies were still those of young children. The rooms were warm and well lighted; it was probably one of those lazy summer evenings back in a tropical country. Our Mother who’s a nurse, was not around—actually, we grew up practically without her as she would be working abroad to earn for the family. My late Father would be the ‘house-husband’ and he had his own small businesses. In this dream, we were preparing to go to bed for the evening though it wasn’t that late yet. Then our late Father gave us instructions to brush our teeth before going to bed, which we did with such sincere flourish and in complete ritual-like actions.

Then I saw my friend Bob (Coscoluella) in the room as if he was part of the family. I heard laughs in the same room; it’s as if we were playing around while doing our ritual on tooth-brushing before going to bed. Then I heard the boom of a big ship—apparently it’s one or two of the ships that were probably moving in or out of the deep harbor here in New York City. I happened to live in Staten Island, which has a neighborhood called Stapleton and we’re a few blocks away from the ferry terminal. In the evening or on certain hours of the day, we would hear the boom sounds coming from the ships passing by our place.

Then I knew with the sound of the ship/s, I’m already up and awake. I wonder in my heart what that dream meant.
